Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium is one of the oldest private cemeteries and the oldest crematorium in the Netherlands. The Westerveld country estate was established with royal approval on 23 July 1888, as ‘a special cemetery for all denominations’. The cemetery was officially opened on 1 May 1890.
It was designed by L. Zocher, a famous Dutch landscape architect from Haarlem. The first crematorium in the Netherlands was built in 1913 ‘on’ Westerveld. It was built on the instructions of the then Royal Dutch 'Facultatieve', which has played a leading role in the cremation sector in the Netherlands since its establishment in 1874.
The Crematorium made an important piece of history with its first cremation (1 April 1914). Marius Poel was the architect of the crematorium, now a listed building. Later, the second auditorium and various columbaria were built under the supervision of the renowned architect, Willem Marinus Dudok.
