At Overweersepolderdijk 24 in Purmerend lies a beautiful old graveyard. With its wonderful old gravestones and a neo-Norman Chapel, this churchyard is situated in an attractive garden.
Burials took place here between 1875 to 1973 but the graveyard then fell into neglect and was badly vandalised. In 1998, the Purmerend municipal authorities decided to classify the chapel and the entrance gate as historic monuments.
The Overweersepolderdijk Churchyard Foundation was established in 2004 to protect this attractive and tranquil spot from further neglect, and to draw up an ambitious plan to repair and restore this local cultural heritage.
The aim of the foundation is to restore the graveyard to its former glory. It lies at the edge of the old town, in the heart of the Overwhere quarter, and is surrounded by villas, houses, an agricultural school and a care home. This fantastic location, right in the town centre, is of vital cultural-historical value, and is set to play a key role in Purmerend’s communal life. For this reason, the foundation’s committee intends to make the churchyard a place of peace and tranquillity for everyone.
