On 7 April 2004, the Royal Dutch Mint in Utrecht struck a special commemorative medal to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dieren Crematorium. The first medal was struck by the acting Mayor of Rheden, Mrs P. Schadd – de Boer, and Mr J.M.H.J. Keizer, President and CEO of ‘the Facultatieve Group’. Second crematorium Dieren Crematorium is the second crematorium to have been built in the Netherlands and was opened on 24 April 1954. Construction was necessary because an increasingly greater number of people in East and North Netherlands wanted to be cremated. The high transport costs to the then sole crematorium in the Netherlands, Velsen Crematorium in Driehuis (currently Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium), became more and more of a drawback. Royal Dutch Cremation Society ‘the Facultatieve ’Like the first crematorium (Velsen, opened in 1913), the building of the Dieren crematorium was commissioned by the current Royal Dutch Cremation Society ‘the Facultatieve’ (1874). The first stone was laid on 30 May 1953 by Mr J.J. de Bruin, the then Mayor of Rheden. Due to the growth in the number of cremations, and the continual optimizing of services, Dieren Crematorium has been expanded and adapted a great many times so that all wishes can be catered for. New website To celebrate the anniversary, a new website has been introduced this week. On this website - www.crematoriumdieren.nl – visitors find not only plenty of information, but can also take a virtual guided tour and view the photo book. Open day on 24 April On Saturday 24 April – the date the crematorium opened 50 years ago – Dieren Crematorium is holding an open day. During this open day, between 11:00 and 16:00 hrs, everybody is welcome to have a peek behind the scenes. |
