 During the General Assembly of Representatives of the VVD (the Dutch People's Party of Freedom & Democracy) on Saturday 13 November, 2010, Mr Hermans – Vice-President of the Supervisory Board of 'the Facultatieve Group' – was elected as VVD top candidate for the Dutch Upper House.
A new top candidate was required in advance of the March 2011 elections owing to the appointment of former top candidate Mr Uri Rosenthal to the post of Foreign Affairs Minister in the Rutte Cabinet.
