Moscowa Cemetery & Crematorium – part of ‘the Facultatieve Group’ – organised an Open Day on 29 May. There was great interest, and almost 500 visitors came to have a look behind the scenes. The unveiling of the monument to the Arnhem (NL) writer Gerard Keller was also very positively received.
Tours
Guided tours were given by Guides from the IVN (nature and environment education association) and Moscowa staff. The guides gave extensive explanations about the great diversity of plants and trees to be found in the memorial park. As one would expect, much was also said about unusual grave monuments both modern and old. Those who took part in the walks were full of enthusiasm about the combination of nature and memorial park.
It was possible to visit almost every area during the Open Day. There was a great deal of interest in the special Information & Aftercare area, where visitors could view urns, monuments and jewellery, and of course have all their questions answered. The recently renovated cremation area also attracted many visitors. Not only has the cremator been replaced, but the cremation area itself has been given a facelift.
Gerard Keller
The monument to the Arnhem writer and chief editor of the Arnhemse Courant newspaper, Gerard Keller (1829-1899), was unveiled in the afternoon, after a reading given by the well-known literary historian Nop Maas from and about Keller’s work. Keller served Arnhem as a truly liberal chief editor for many years, but most of all was known as a kind, modest man. The many invitees were greatly impressed by this initiative.
There was a special programme with stories and music for children.
