Based on the idea that everyone is entitled to an informed choice between cremation and burial, Koninklijke Facultatieve (founded in 1874) has developed a special brochure and website: Cremation or burial?
“Some people have a very clear idea of how their funeral should go,“ said Mr W.H.J.M. Hillebrandt, chairman of Koninklijke Facultatieve. “They have already made their decision. This is a very comforting thought for the next of kin, as it means they are not faced with such difficult choices. Unfortunately, such individuals are in a minority, leaving many bereaved people with the unenviable decision of whether to cremate or bury their loved ones. However, many people lack sufficient information to be able to make an informed decision, so education is essential. Only someone who has been properly advised can make such a conscious judgement.”
Informed decision
Hillebrandt: “The choice between burial and cremation is one of the key decisions round a funeral, which is why it is so important to consider it in advance. Death already entails so many emotions that it is often very difficult to make well-considered decisions at such a time. The risk of subsequent disappointment is drastically reduced if those concerned are well-informed on the options and consequences relating to cremation and burial before having to make such a decision. The brochure and the website play a crucial role in this.”
The brochure includes pretty much all the options and covers every detail - not only answering questions on the different types of grave, but naturally also describing in depth the various possibilities for memorials and locations for scattering the ashes. The brochure is distributed to funerary companies, but is also issued to those involved in leading funerals, such as pastors, ministers and humanist counsellors. It is of course also available directly from the secretariat of the Royal Dutch Cremation Society: +31 (0)70 351 8800 or info@kon-ver-facultatieve.org. The address of the website is www.cremerenofbegraven.org.
