The Dieren Crematorium – part of ‘the Facultatieve Group’ – organised an Open Day on 29 May between 9.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.. Some 500 people came to see the crematorium and there was a special treasure hunt for children which was received with great enthusiasm.
All areas
Visitors could visit almost all areas during the Open Day. They could decide their own route using a detailed plan of the site. Staff were on hand at important locations to provide information and answer questions. Many visitors were interested in the cremation area itself and there were many questions here but a great number of uncertainties were resolved with the clear answers. Everyone could take a rest in the coffee room and try the various snacks and drinks – something that can also be provided after a ceremony. Visitors were astonished by the range of refreshments on offer and the professionalism of the kitchens.
A walking route was also created outside in the wooded memorial park. It was possible to see the various columbaria and gardens of rest and a number of old crafts were demonstrated. A blacksmith and stonemason showed how to make a monument using traditional techniques.
Children
Many visitors came with their entire family, including (small) children. They were grateful for the special children’s programme, which provided information about difficult subjects such as death, funerals, the crematorium and mourning in a playful manner.
The reaction from the visitors was very positive. They were enthusiastic about the openness and atmosphere and returned home with a good feeling.
