The traditional Concerto in Memoriam was held in the park of Cemetery & Crematorium Westerveld on 11 June 2006 and again received a lot of positive response. Many visitors were very impressed by the open-air concert and, despite the high temperatures, more than 5000 people came to Driehuis. This high attendance shows that the Concerto in Memoriam, which has taken place since 1994, is still a popular event.
Varied musical program As in previous years, the program was very broad. The well-known Dutch composer/piano-player Laurens Van Rooyen performed a few edited as well as self-composed musical pieces. The world-famous Royal Choral Society ‘Mastreechter Staar’ brought pieces from Fauré, Gounod and Verdi. In the ‘final’ Laurens van Rooyen accompanied the Mastreechter Staar with the song ‘We’ll meet again’, which was made famous around the world by Vera Lynn.
Impressive Words of Solace During the concert, Bettine Vriesekoop – former table-tennis champion and future correspondent for NRC (a large national daily paper in The Netherlands) in China – spoke impressive and personal words of solace. She spoke about her personal experiences on how to deal with loss. If you would like to read the words of solace of Bettine Vriesekoop, click here (in Dutch).
The 2007 Concerto in Memoriam will be held on Sunday 10 June.
