On Sunday 7 June, the traditional Concerto in Memoriam once again took place in the monumental memorial park of Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium, part of 'the Facultatieve Group'. With around 4,800 visitors, the memorial concert was very popular yet again.
The music was provided by the ‘Colla Voce’ orchestra (conducted by Bob Berkemeier), soprano Clara de Vries and violinist Loek Lufting. As always, the organizers did their utmost to provide visitors with a full programme. For example, pieces by Grieg, Berlioz and Mozart were played, while ‘Summertime’ from the musical Porgy and Bess by George Gershwin was also performed.
During the Concerto in Memoriam, poet F. Starik recited the poem Op wonderbaarlijke wijze (In a wonderful way), which had been specially written for this event. The Word of Comfort by Arjan Erkel was also very striking. He talked at length about his experiences of being abducted and held by rebels for over six hundred days while in Dagestan for Doctors Without Borders.
