On Sunday 31 October, ‘De Boskamp’ cemetery in Assen hosted the special ‘Alom Gedenken’ commemoration ceremony. Around 500 visitors participated in this unique silent procession, which focused specifically on remembrance. This event was partly organized by 'De Boskamp' Funeral Centre & Crematorium, part of ‘the Facultatieve Group’.
The procession was illuminated by burning torches and fire baskets and each visitor was given a candle. At the columbarium, the Arioso choir gave a wonderful recital of various pieces from a requiem. This was followed by Petra de Kruif – spiritual guardian of the Wilhelmina hospital – who focussed on commemorative items: things that help to trigger and process memories of the deceased. After the silent procession visitors went their own way. Various choirs – including the 40-strong Assen Male Voice Choir and the ICO Ladies Choir – were spread about the site and sang a number of striking songs. The famous Dutch poet John van Beek also recited special poems.
Visitors reacted very positively to the ceremony. During 'Alom Gedenken', those that wished to do so could light a candle, place a commemorative stone, listen to music or commemorate a loved one in their own way, either communally or alone.
